Berry Bees is an animated TV series created for the Nine Network, first airing on 9Go! in Australia on 5 October 2019. It draws from the Italian book series of the same name by Cat Le Blanc. The show is a co-production between Atlantyca Entertainment, SLR Productions, Telegael, and Cosmos-Maya Production. The entire series is available for streaming on Stan. The story follows three young girls who work as undercover spies.

The plot revolves around Bobby, Lola, and Juliette, three extraordinary 10-year-olds who appear to lead ordinary lives. In secret, they operate as the "Berry Bees" for the Bee Intelligence Agency (B.I.A.), a covert organization that selected them for special spy missions. Each girl is given a berry-themed codename and receives gadgets from the agency's head, Ms. Berry, in every episode. Their typical task is to thwart the schemes of recurring villains like Tara Bytes, Mirage, and the Greenthumbs. Each episode ends with the villain escaping in the confusion, leaving things back to normal.

The main characters include Bobby, a tech expert and nerd codenamed Raspberry; Lola, a skilled contortionist and acrobat codenamed Strawberry; Juliette, a talented actress and mentalist codenamed Blueberry; and Ms. Berry, the B.I.A. head. The villains are Tara Bytes, a corrupt tech mogul who focuses on advanced technology; Aaron Mirage, a thief who can impersonate anyone; and Cosmo and Fauna Greenthumb, a bickering elderly couple who want to improve the environment for animals.

Production was announced on 16 October 2018. The visual team drew inspiration from Mission Impossible and James Bond films. Director Niccolò Sacchi also cited The Incredibles for its character and action scenes, and said he looked to Kim Possible constantly for its direction and staging. The design reference was Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, aiming for characters without outlines, using shadows to add depth to skin and expressions.

The first season has 52 episodes, each 11 minutes long. The series premiered on 9Go! in Australia on 5 October 2019. After the seventh episode, premieres moved from Saturdays to Sundays starting 27 October. In Italy, the series debuted on Rai Gulp on 16 December, airing episodes 2 and 10. Because the Australian broadcast combines two segments into one, the cold open of every second episode is cut, but it is kept in the Italian broadcast where segments

Reader's Guide

Berry Bees represents a cross-continental co-production between Italy, Australia, Ireland, and India, reflecting the global nature of modern children's animation. Its premiere on 9Go! in Australia and subsequent broadcast on Rai Gulp in Italy introduced the series to international audiences. The show's nomination for an AWGIE Award before its Australian premiere highlights early industry recognition. The series is notable for its all-female main cast of young spies, a departure from many action-adventure cartoons. Its availability on Stan in Australia ensures continued accessibility. The show's episodic structure, with villains escaping at the end, maintains a classic cartoon formula while incorporating contemporary tech and environmental themes through villains like Tara Bytes and the Greenthumbs.
